When they get a whiff that something rewarding is available to you (be it a deliciously cheesey slice of pizza or sexy time with a sexy human) they make their way down a well-worn path and end up in your nucleus accumbens, a spongy little region located towards the centre of your brain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, these little critters aren\u2019t the kind to arrive quietly to a party. When they reach their destination, they legit *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ANNOUNCE*<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> themselves, \u00a0grabbing your attention and prompting you to do everything you can to maximise your chances of reaping the available reward (by sweet-talking the pizza man or *not* mentioning your rampant toe hair, for example). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re successful in obtaining the reward, They. Go. Nuts. Along with the natural opioids in your brain, giving you a big ol\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whoosh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pleasure. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why am I telling you all this? Two reasons: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re motivated to seek out rewards on a biochemical level&#8230; it\u2019s quite literally programmed into our cells (*OMG WE\u2019RE COMPUTERS*)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our little dopamine critters don\u2019t just go crazy for cheese and naughty bits\u2026 they have a legit NYE 1999 PARTAY <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(sans questionable midnight smooch and high-level anxiety about Y2K)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when we\u2019re presented with an opportunity for internal or\u2014in proper psyc speak\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intrinsic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rewards, like new knowledge, emotional connection, or a nice head-swelling sense of accomplishment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this, my friend, is an as-good-as-it\u2019s-going-to-get segue into indirect hints. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"weight-bold font-highlight\"><b>PART II: THE WHATS AND WHYS OF INDIRECT HINTS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ARE <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indirect hints?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welp, in simple terms, they\u2019re the schneaky-schneak cousins of standard hints: less explicit and slightly trickier to solve. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While direct hints give you all the information you need to reach a set conclusion, indirect hints leave an element out, forcing you\u2014the hintee\u2014to engage a little deeper with the challenge at hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0168661\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (conducted in the field of neuroeducation, where indirect hints are currently making a name for themselves) put them to the test across a series of mathematical equations. As we\u2019re about to learn, this kind of guided discovery creates near-perfect reward conditions, causing that dopamine party we just spoke about to kick right off.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright, back to the research&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies (like the one above) show\u2014quite clearly\u2014that tasks with an intermediate level of difficulty induce the largest sense of accomplishment for us humans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you know what handy little tools can render a task intermediately difficult, dangling the prize of accomplishment in front of those reward-seeking neurotransmitters poised at the ready inside our brains? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You guessed it! Indirect hints. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"weight-bold weight-regular color-black\" style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">*I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CAPTAIN CLEVERSTICKS*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fact is, when a task is too easy, not a lot goes on in our brains. There\u2019s no anticipated reward so our dopamine lays low, keeping us unexcited and relatively disengaged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other end of the spectrum, when a task is too difficult, we tend to give up. And our brains? Welp, they\u2019re certainly not celebrating our failures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where indirect hints shine brightest.<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/xT5LMD7WPgqXfjUJsQ\/giphy.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to their perfectly balanced level of difficulty and subsequent reward potential, they have an uncanny ability to keep people *highly* motivated and engaged: two things we should always be aiming for in the world of copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While motivation and engagement are some pretty sweet powers for small strings of words to possess, they\u2019re only part of the picture. To fully understand the influence of indirect hints, we need to take a quick trip into one more world&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social psychology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We already know indirect hints get part of their power from the fact we\u2019re motivated\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a biological level\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to seek reward. The second part of their secret recipe (don\u2019t tell the Colonel!) is this key fact of human existence:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><em><strong>We love to feel special, like we\u2019re part of a team. <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We instinctively seek out similarities and common ground with others in order to find a connection and a point of reference we can evaluate them from. This, by the way, is why all that voice of customer research you should be doing as a copywriter is so important\u2014if we write the things our customers say, we\u2019re paving that common ground right from the get-go. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indirect hints can accelerate this process, providing opportunities for your audience to firm up connections through a process of guided discovery. As well as lighting up their reward pathways and invoking all the good stuff mentioned above, this process also acts as a \u2018VIP-only\u2019 invitation into your (or your client\u2019s) world&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i>Because when someone gets the joke, shares the knowledge, or understands the reference, you automatically become more accessible and relatable. <\/i><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sweeten the deal even further, if your prospect has a high opinion of you, being able to align themselves with you on this level does great things for their self-esteem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confused? This is where my trail of breadcrumbs comes in\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Did you know I was talking about hobbits way back in my opener?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Did you have a little chuckle at my quip about toe hair being a romantic deal breaker? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Did you understand the relevance of my Goldilocks gif, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you read the following paragraph?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And, finally, did you clock my reference to KFC\u2019s 11 \u2018Secret\u2019 Herbs and Spices?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you answered \u2018yes\u2019 to any of these&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you feel yourself leaning in? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liking me more?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or even aligning with me, this relative stranger on the other side of your screen?<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/LV0m4BLmvL2oM\/giphy.gif\" width=\"396\" height=\"229\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indirect hints are a way of social synching; a way of inviting readers into your (or your client\u2019s) circle. And this is important because&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likeability is one of the key factors in conversion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a prospect feels like part of your \u2018group\u2019, they\u2019re more likely to share your attitudes and beliefs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This latter phenomenon is referred to as social influence and is incredibly valuable in marketing. It makes people more likely to invest in a product you say is valuable and more likely to be satisfied with that purchase, which in turn makes them more likely to sing your praises. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HUZZAH!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we\u2019re clear on why indirect hints should have a place in your copy toolkit, let\u2019s take a deeper look at how to use \u2018em. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"font-highlight\"><b>PART III: IDENTIFICATION AND IMPLEMENTATION <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to get a handle on how to use any new tool is to study existing examples. With this in mind, let\u2019s look at the indirect hints in this post in a little more detail, before we move on to explicit how-to\u2019s. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Indirect hint #1: My opening crack about Tolkien and hairy feet<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Well that was a long title. Tolkien himself would be impressed (and he\u2019d be over the MOON if he saw the amount of hair attached to my big toes).\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>What makes it <\/b><b><i>in<\/i><\/b><b>direct:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I didn\u2019t explicitly mention hobbits, or Tolkien&#8217;s fondness for page-long sentences, but gave you enough information to make the connections yourself, banking on the likelihood you\u2019ve read his books or watched the movies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why I used it:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To start the post on a memorable note and hook you in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Indirect hint #2: My crack about toe hair\u2019s pick-up potential<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Prompting you to do everything you can to maximise your chances of reaping the available reward (by sweet-talking the pizza man or *not* mentioning your rampant toe hair, for example).\u2019 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>What makes it <\/b><b><i>in<\/i><\/b><b>direct:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While I mentioned \u2018sexy time with a sexy human\u2019 as a potential reward in an earlier paragraph, there\u2019s a good few sentences in between, requiring you to go back and join the dots between this method of maximising your chances of reward and the reward itself. The success of this one also depends on you *not* finding toe hair attractive, but that\u2019s a risk I was prepared to take. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why I used it: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add some colour to my chat about neurochemistry and make the subject accessible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Indirect hint #3: The Lisa Simpson Goldilocks gif<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/xT5LMD7WPgqXfjUJsQ\/giphy.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/>\n<p><b>What makes it <\/b><b><i>in<\/i><\/b><b>direct:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I inserted this little gif during a discussion of task difficulty, banking on the fact you\u2019d be familiar with the character\u2019s fondness for things that were \u2018just right\u2019, prompting you to transfer this quality to indirect hints. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why I used it: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give you the opportunity to reach the conclusion before I spelled it out and\u2014in doing so\u2014meet me there as an equal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Indirect hint #4: My oblique reference to The Colonel<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The second part of their secret recipe (don\u2019t tell the Colonel!)\u2019 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>What makes it <\/b><b><i>in<\/i><\/b><b>direct:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There\u2019s a pretty decent gap between the two key concepts here, but hopefully just the right amount of pointers (secret recipe and Colonel) to help you get the reference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why I used it: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To let you know I was about to give away some juicy intel and, in doing so, invite you further into the fold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you get too excited and start injecting indirect hints into your copy willy-nilly, take a gander at my five steps for implementation success; designed to help YOU wield your shiny new tool like a seasoned expert. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Step 1: Know your goal <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indirect hints can be tricky little things to craft, especially if you\u2019re not crystal-clear on the message you\u2019re trying to convey <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what you\u2019re hoping to achieve. Because of this, I sometimes find they\u2019re easier to inject <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ve written your first draft, approaching them like you\u2019d rewrite a sentence to add personality or drive home a point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Step 2: Know your audience <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could drop the best indirect hint about Kanye West the world has ever seen, but if it\u2019s landing in the laps of 90 year-old nannas who think that\u2019s a little-known town somewhere in California, it won\u2019t be helping your cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Step 3: Pick your form<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you might\u2019ve guessed from this here post, my favourite ways to slip \u2018em in are as metaphors, gifs, or punchy one liners. In my view, this keeps them natural, engaging, and personality-forward, which is exactly how I like my copy. You can use them without relying on humour of course: simply pick the method that matches your project and TOV the best. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Step 4: Show restraint<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat after me: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will not use indirect hints as an excuse to populate my copy with riddles.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As powerful as indirect hints are, clarity reigns supreme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"weight-bold color-blue\" style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>Step 5: Close the gap\u2026 eventually<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implicit nature of indirect hints, coupled with the inevitable variations in knowledge and interests between your individual prospects leaves room for error; for even your best indirect hints not to land. Which can be a problem, because the thing with accomplishment is you need to know to know you\u2019ve nailed the task at hand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you start the celebrations.
