{"id":2520,"date":"2019-02-19T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T05:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/?p=2520"},"modified":"2019-02-22T01:44:58","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T18:44:58","slug":"hosting-copywriting-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/hosting-copywriting-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"What I learned hosting my first copywriting conference."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Saturday evening\u2014one day after the last speaker left the stage and our first ever copywriting conference\u00a0was over\u2014I sat down briefly with Kira to look back on the events of the past couple of days&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Two days of <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/tccirl-purchase\/\">incredible presentations about copywriting<\/a>, persuasion, and freelancing from true A-listers like Parris Lampropolous, Marcella Allison, and Kim Schwalm\u2014and 15 others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dinner out at a fancy Italian bistro with our Think Tank crew while other conference attendees went to dinner with one of the speakers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>A women&#8217;s only breakfast for those who could drag themselves out of bed for Eggs Benedict.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A killer after party in the rooftop bar where everyone at the conference went to unwind, laugh, share what they had learned\u2014and \u201cdrink like Hemingway\u201d as we say. <em>Then there was the after-the-after-party-party.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And the optional day-after scavenger hunt that took us to Mafia bars, Chinatown tourist spots, and coffee shops around the lower east side. <em>Nudge&#8230; ask Kira who&#8217;s team won.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2525 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/RobKiraTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/>We were exhausted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;How do you think we did?&#8221;, Kira asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;m going to say this, but I feel like we hit a home run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, I couldn\u2019t believe it had all come together so well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In less than 8 weeks, <em>The Copywriter Club In Real Life (TCCIRL)<\/em> went from an idea we thought we would tackle in a few years, to the what we think is the best copywriting conference anywhere.<em>\u00a0Not that we&#8217;re biased.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we learned a few things along the way\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #1 If you organize it, they will come.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve worked hard to build a community of smart working copywriters from around the world\u2014all dedicated to doing great work and building successful copywriting careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2528 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/TepsiiTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Copywriter Con\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>Over the previous year we had attracted a good-sized audience for <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/podcast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Copywriter Club Podcast<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and added about 5,000+ members to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/thecopywriterclub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free Facebook group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We had successfully filled <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copywriter-accelerator\/\"><em>The Copywriter Accelerator<\/em><\/a> program and the first \u201cclass\u201d of our <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copywriter-think-tank\/\">Think Tank<\/a> mastermind group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But would a group of introverted wordsmiths attend a conference about copywriting in the middle of winter\u2014over the Valentine\u2019s Day weekend?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Easy answer: Yes. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 80 copywriters of all skill levels packed into the conference room at the Hotel 50 Bowery to listen, laugh, and learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though we had never met the vast majority of people who were there, we immediately knew we were among friends\u2014not the kind of friends you occasionally see post their vacation pics on Instagram\u2014but good friends you want to hang out with again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay Rooney, one of the copywriters who came to Manhattan with us, said this about how easily fast friendships were formed&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2521\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IRL-jay-1.png\" alt=\"Best Copywriter Event\" width=\"500\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IRL-jay-1.png 1014w, https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IRL-jay-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IRL-jay-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IRL-jay-1-768x771.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These ~100 new \u201cfriends\u201d made TCCIRL an amazing experience for all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #2 Great things happen when you work your a**es off.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2535 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/KiraRobTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Kira at Copywriting Event\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>There is a massive amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at a copy conference like this. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This won\u2019t surprise you if you\u2019ve been involved with an event before, but the process includes negotiating with the hotel, hiring an AV team, convincing speakers to attend, selling tickets, arranging for coffee breaks, printing signs and books, assembling the swag and name tags and presentation slides, setting up the after party and dinners and activities\u2026 and\u2026 and\u2026 and\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;&#8211;this list is looooong.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easily the hardest thing we did was trying to get everyone back into the room after breaks\u2014there was simply too much to talk about, people to meet, friendships to form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately Kira had some experience with events. And we connected with a <a href=\"http:\/\/elainewellman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fantastic event coordinator<\/a> (Elaine Wellman) to help organize everything and keep it moving. It wouldn\u2019t have happened without her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lesson here? Great things come to those who work their tails off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lesson #3\u00a0<\/strong><b>TCCIRL isn\u2019t the Kira and Rob Show. It takes a team to pull something like this off.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2529 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AudienceTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Copywriter Event\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>I already mentioned Elaine who was a big part of putting TCCIRL together. But she wasn\u2019t the only one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AV crew was there to help make sure the sound and presentations came off without a hitch (or maybe just one hitch\u2026 see below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/joanna-wiebe\/\">Joanna Wiebe<\/a> gave us permission to print one of her digital-only books to create a valuable, one-of-a-kind gift for attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/direct-response-expert-brian-kurtz\/\">Brian Kurtz<\/a> gave everyone a copy of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brilliance Breakthrough<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Eugene Schwartz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/processes-investing-in-yourself-christine-laureano\/\">Christine Laureano<\/a> helped find a case of water so our speakers wouldn\u2019t suffer from dry-throat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>We had a photographer ready to catch each Kodak moment. <em>&lt;&#8211; do Kodak moments still happen?<\/em><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/headline-project-copywriter-justin-blackman\/\">Justin Blackman<\/a> showed up a day early to help put together the swag bags.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copywriters-social-media-va-brit-mcginnis\/\">Brit McGinnis<\/a>, our community manager, was there to help with anything else\u2014like handing out badges and chasing down Coke Zeros or lunch when I didn\u2019t have time to get food between sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know I\u2019m not giving credit to a bunch of other people who promoted the event, hosted groups of attendees for dinner, and supported us in a dozen ways. If I\u2019ve left your name off here, please forgive me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without all of these amazing people, this copywriting event never would have happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #4 A successful copywriting conference is all about getting the right people in the room.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2526 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/KimMarcellaTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Copy Conference\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>We\u2019d love to take credit for how great everything turned out, but the truth is, the copywriters who took the stage as well as those who sat in the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0horribly uncomfortable chairs in the room made the real difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First we asked two of our mentors, Joanna Wiebe and Brian Kurtz to come. Both were enthusiastic early supporters. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then we started reaching out to the other copywriters we wanted on stage\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/a-list-copywriter-marcella-allison\/\">Marcella Allison<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/tcc-podcast-18-hillary-weiss\/\">Hillary Weiss<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copy-chief-kevin-rogers\/\">Kevin Rogers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/laura-belgray\/\">Laura Belgray<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/sam-woods\/\">Sam Woods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copywriter-ry-schwartz\/\">Ry Schwartz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/a-list-copywriter-kim-krause-schwalm\/\">Kim Krause Schwalm<\/a>&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We thought most of them would be too busy so we invited even more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they all said yes, we suddenly had 18 people to fit into our two-day agenda. And when Parris reached out to ask why we had invited all his friends but not him, well, who\u2019s going to pass up the opportunity to have Parris speak?<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2531 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ParrisLampropolous.gif\" alt=\"Parris Copywriting\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somehow we made it work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it wasn\u2019t just the people on stage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margo Aaron came and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/margo-aaron\/the-real-secret-to-building-an-engaged-audience-according-to-americas-top-copywriters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote about TCCIRL for Inc<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcella Allison brought her laugh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others brought small gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/psychology-in-copy-kirsty-fanton\/\">Kirsty Fanton<\/a> and Ami Williamson flew in from Australia. Per Andreason came from Denmark. Sharon Mann flew in from France. <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copy-brand-sorcha-mackenzie\/\">Sorcha MacKenzie<\/a> came in from London. <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/authentic-personal-brand-tepsii\/\">Tepsii<\/a> came from South Africa. And <a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/10x-6-years-copywriter-prerna-malik\/\">Prerna Malik<\/a> came all the way from India\u2014she spent an entire day in airports just to spend time with us at TCCIRL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you kidding me? We were thinking a few people might fly in from around the United States or Canada (and they did) but so many from around the world? From Australia? South Africa?\u00a0India? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now\u2014several attendees from last year already have their tickets to join us on stage for this year\u2019s copy conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We met them, learned about their work and businesses at the first TCCIRL. It just makes sense to have them come back and share what they\u2019ve done over the past year. And just like last year, I\u2019m guessing we\u2019ll find a few of next year\u2019s speakers in the seats this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #5 There are much better ways to make money than hosting a copywriting event.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we told people that we were producing our own event, several of them warned us that no one makes money on their first event. \u201cYou lose money on the first, break even on the second, and hope to make a little on your third,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t know about the second and third parts of that advice, but the first part was true. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We didn\u2019t make any money by holding an event. Fortunately, we didn\u2019t lose too much either. And we probably won\u2019t quite break even on our second go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why do it again, if we\u2019re not making money from TCCIRL?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the real ROI isn\u2019t the money spent or earned. Attending an event is rewarding in so many other ways. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2527 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AfterPartyTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Copy Con\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>Getting copywriters together in real life is what <em>The Copywriter Club<\/em> does. We\u2019re not solely interested in creating online relationships via Facebook and Zoom. Seeing friends from the FB group in real life is a difference maker. We want to keep building lifelong friendships, partnerships, and collaborations\u2014and those kinds of relationships only happen IRL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanging out (dining, drinking, dancing) with other writers is freaking awesome. And the lessons learned and information shared is so worth it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year\u2019s presenters shared business secrets that they don\u2019t talk about anywhere else. The ONLY way to learn this stuff is to get into the room with them. That\u2019s why it\u2019s worth it to us\u2014even when we don\u2019t make money in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And let\u2019s be honest, this event helped attract even more members to <em>The Copywriter Club<\/em>. It was a big brand builder for us\u2026 so it definitely pays off in other ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #6 Glitches happen. You\u2019ve just got to roll with them.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2532 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/HillaryTCCIRL.gif\" alt=\"Copy Conference Hillary Weiss\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/>At one point on the second day, I had the wrong version of Hillary\u2019s slides loaded on the laptop we used to run the show. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No problem. She started talking as I started downloading the correct slide deck. But hotel conference wifi is slooooooooow. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;&#8211; this number of o\u2019s dramatically understates the slowness of the wifi.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took almost 12 minutes to get the right slides up on screen. <em>12 minutes!<\/em> Hillary is a total pro. She jumped into her presentation without the slides and didn\u2019t miss a beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there were the chairs. So uncomfortable. Sorry about that. We won\u2019t make that mistake again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuff happens. That\u2019s part of life. Fortunately people are forgiving and made due. Again, we are so grateful for their generosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Lesson #7 Every quantum leap requires an actual LEAP.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year ago, if you had asked \u201care you ready to produce your own copywriting event?\u201d we would have said, \u201cno way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>We <i>absolutely<\/i> were not ready.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then the opportunity presented itself and we jumped at it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If not now, when?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We did a hundred things we\u2019d never done before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 8 short weeks TCCIRL went from an idea we might get to \u201cwhen we\u2019re ready\u201d to a successful conference that no one wanted to end. The best learning. The best community.<\/strong> <\/em>That\u2019s what we tried to deliver with TCCIRL last year. And this year? Well, we\u2019re going all in to make sure our event March 13-15 is better than ever.
