Pen and paper also work.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nNow let\u2019s get to it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really dislike the insulation part of a building project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From winter-proofing our house to finishing up the cabin I\u2019m building in the woods, insulation is the step I put off until it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absolutely <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hate it because it\u2019s gross. It gets everywhere. It&#8217;s totally itchy and I have to wrap myself up head-to-toe in a coverall that says my name is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, goggles, mask, hat, and gloves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then I crawl around for hours on end armed with a staple gun and utility knife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s awful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3334\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_2573.jpg\" alt=\"recession proof copywriting business\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_2573.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_2573-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_2573-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Me, in the attic, disliking everything.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>But the thing is, without insulation in your house, you\u2019re just wasting energy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your home\/cabin (and wallet) will pump heating and cooling and it will all&#8230;dissipate into the ether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulation is what gives your home a baseline temperature, protecting you from the highs and the lows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Recession-proofing your business is like insulating a house.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems like such an arduous insurmountable task that will probably take <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and requires <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> much gear&#8230; so we put it off and focus on client work instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because that\u2019s what pays the bills, yeah?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When bad economic weather hits you won\u2019t be caught pumping wasted energy only to get bad leads and scrambling to make ends meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Luckily, recession-proofing is not as complicated as it sounds.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the right-before-COVID times, I went to The Copywriter Club In Real Life event (TCC IRL 2020) and heard Rob Marsh\u2019s presentation all about how to do recession-proof your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were all nervously chuckling at how on-point it was while taking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">furious<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes at the conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Spidey-senses knew that when we got home, the pandemic would find ways to make serious waves in our business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And those waves would probably suck <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I was sitting there writing down Rob\u2019s tips trying desperately to ignore my sweaty armpits, I realized I was nodding along because I had already done all of these things!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Call me a giant worry-wort, but recession-proofing my biz was my #1 objective waaaay back at the beginning of 2019.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just didn\u2019t have his nifty framework to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 was Year 2 of me as a full-time copywriter. I did pretty well in my first year, but instead of doubling down to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I slowed up. I wanted to make sure that when (not if) a recession hit, my business could survive it.\u00a0 We were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overdue for a recession in 2019 and I did NOT want to go back to a \u2018regular\u2019 job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I knew I couldn\u2019t put off installing the insulation in my business\u2014I had to gear up and get it done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I had Rob\u2019s 6 Tips to follow in 2019 because there would have been way less fumbling around in the dark and more DOING THE THINGS. Buckle up.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tip #1: Don\u2019t run out of money<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like&#8230;isn\u2019t this the goal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, but there are proven strategies to make sure you always have money in the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Pay thyself a salary<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t just pay yourself whatever you make\u2014that leads to potentially devastating cash flow problems. Salaries are your built-in budgeting. They can help you more easily determine your target monthly revenue and make it easier to track your growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit down and run the actual numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you need to pay yourself every month after taxes in order to make ends meet?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s your stretch goal?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s your ideal state?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start at the bottom and slowly work your way up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019 I started paying myself $1,800\/mo and gave myself raises when my business could sustain it. A year later my salary has more than doubled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you know if your business can sustain a salary raise?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly&#8230;I followed my gut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> way would have been to hire a bookkeeper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose what works best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hint:<\/strong> set up an automatic deposit from your business account to your personal so it feels like you\u2019re getting paid a salary. Don\u2019t do it manually. Manually it\u2019s too easy to cheat ;)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you don\u2019t yet have a business bank account, I highly suggest opening one.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3336\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3336 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/check-and-mate.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Understand what you need then go get it, Lindsey Nope style<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Get 3-6 Months of Savings<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob (and many other very smart people) say to have at least 3-6 months of expenses in savings. More is better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is why you have to pay yourself a salary first\u2014so you can properly account for that in your savings.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savings also act as a buffer from feast\/famine cycles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On feast-level months the pot expands, so when famine hits you have a store cache of money there to keep paying yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, a savings cushion is your peace of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always have 5-6 months in my savings because I worry ALL OF THE TIME.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buttttttt it\u2019s easy to see that pot of money and be like&#8230;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what if I just gave myself a nice little bonus????<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Resist!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That savings is your lifeboat when sh*t hits the fan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit the fan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It saved me at the beginning of the recession and multiple times throughout my copywriting career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I never had to go into total fear mode, which made me more confident out in the world pitching to potential clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you follow <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Copywriter Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll know that confidence is the #1 factor in helping you close a new client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Get an anchor client<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stability is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nice during a recession and an anchor client is key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is an anchor client?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A client who nets you predictable income\u2014someone who comes to you for consistent work, a retainer relationship, or they booked you for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really big project<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a multi-month timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This client probably won\u2019t be your ideal client.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heck, I worked with a client for a year where all I did was churn out copy like a machine. It sucked&#8230; <em>to say the least<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I had a stable paycheck that covered half of my salary every month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That meant I just had to make up 50% in new sales a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be okay with working clients that aren\u2019t completely dreamy during a recession\u2014you may need them to get through.\u00a0 But take heart knowing eventually you\u2019ll be able to let them go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 months into the 2020 recession I was finally able to leave my anchor client because I needed more space to move to better waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>\ud83d\udee0<\/b><b>The \u201cGo Try It Out\u201d Section\u2014<\/b><b><i>Tip #1: Don\u2019t Run Out Of Money<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get that spreadsheet linked above or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get out your pen and paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Salary<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is the minimum salary needed to make ends meet?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 What is your stretch goal?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your stretch goal?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your ideal state?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Add about 40% to these numbers to account for taxes and general business expenses. That is your monthly gross revenue goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3-6 Months of Savings<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have a business account, make an action item to go do that.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 How much savings do you have right now? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(in your <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not your personal account)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 How much you need to save for a baseline of 3 months in savings?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 How much do you have to go?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Find An Anchor Client<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Do you have an anchor client already? Yes? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awesome!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Need one? Make a list of places you can go to find one (networking events, local agencies, etc).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Make another list of potential anchor clients and create a plan to get on their radar. Email? Stalk them on LinkedIn? The possibilities are endless.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nTip #2: Frame your business right<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perception is everything. From your initial interaction to the last moment before a client says YES, how you show up is critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you talk about your business with confidence and as the expert you 100% are, sales come easier and you can charge what you\u2019re worth (which is more than you\u2019re charging now).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Raise your rates<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of 2019, I was this little newbie copywriter with a tiny portfolio and few contacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I would go to pitch a potential client, I would start FULL OF CONFIDENCE\u2026and then slowly but surely keep cutting the price down until it felt like what I deserved. <em>(Which wasn\u2019t a lot. Or enough.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with lower prices is that it makes your awesome work look totally <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> awesome to the client. Paying $500 for a 5-page website is a totally different experience than $5,000 for the same work from the same person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2019 was MY year of getting over a ton of money mindset hurdles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I joined an online business accelerator, got an accountability buddy, and talked with a lot of other copywriters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first real \u201caha\u201d moment was with a copywriter who I really respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She told me flat out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnna, I wouldn\u2019t even refer my clients to you. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because you\u2019re not good enough, but because your prices are so low they would just say no immediately.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gut punch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that\u2019s not incentive enough to figure out my prices, I don\u2019t know what would\u2019ve been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I doubled down to figure out what was tripping me up when it came to raising my rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I raised \u2018em.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was fricking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terrifying.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>But people said yes <\/b><b><i>faster<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clients were more engaged, more respectful of my expertise, and trusted in my work more (and revisions weren\u2019t a total nightmare anymore).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raise your rates when it\u2019s right for you, when you can handle the higher level of expectations, and when you have started to outgrow your work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem counterintuitive to raise your rates <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a recession but remember: perception is everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember your client is just as stressed as you are.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See that price will give them more confidence in you, in their decision to hire you, and for the long-term sustainability of their own business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a very money-first society (unfortunately). A solid price engenders confidence\u2014and we all need that during a recession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Build your authority<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the heck even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> authority?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you measure it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t know. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you still <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Authority, simply put, is when someone thinks of you <\/b><b><i>first<\/i><\/b><b> for what you offer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just the number of certifications, courses, or corporate client logos you collect (though that helps wildly).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not how quickly you can rattle off copywriting methods and best practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s about staying top of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that means generating content and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(ugggggh) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I avoided intentionally marketing myself for a really long time&#8230;and struggled with inbound leads <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constantly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3337\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3337 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Gif-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daenerys = dragon queen, you = best copywriter in your market<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with a marketing tactic that you feel the most comfortable with (podcasts, blogging, email newsletters, social media), get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good at it, and then grow from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You can\u2019t force yourself to do something you don\u2019t like.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you try to make yourself do podcasts but hate public speaking, you\u2019ll procrastinate until the cows come home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I knew I needed to build up my authority because I was a noob with little going for them but naivet\u00e9 and stamina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was pretty good at thinking on my feet, so in 2019 I volunteered to moderate panels at local events, tried my hand at running workshops, did (very) small speaking engagements, and became co-leader of a local meetup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also started sending out a weekly email newsletter where I write whatever the hell is on my mind and people seem to like it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now 100% of my business is referrals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Find the type of content you\u2019re really good at and dedicate yourself to it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where authority is born.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>\ud83d\udee0<\/b><b>The \u201cGo Try It Out\u201d Section\u2014<\/b><b><i>Tip #2: Frame Your Business Right\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the spreadsheet linked above or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get out your pen and paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Raise your rates<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your signature service? (podcasting, speaking, blog writing, email newsletters, videos\u2026.)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What&#8217;s your second best thing?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Come up with an AUTHORITY plan and make it happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nTip #3: Work on your systems<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of times freelancers (me included) tend to panic when we don\u2019t have an active project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We think \u201cOMG NO ONE WILL EVER WANT TO WORK WITH ME AGAIN THIS IS THE END.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then we cycle into desperation mode and put all of our energy into client generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we should put <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energy into generating new leads, but having a lull in client work is actually a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gift.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the time where you can shore up your processes, audit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yourself<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and make sure every single touchpoint a client has with you is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awesome <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(which makes them way more likely to re-hire you and\/or refer you).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Systems also make your head less likely to explode.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3338\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3338\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3338 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GIF-3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"206\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great systems = confidence<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few systems to focus on:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Sales and lead generation\u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every week I set aside one hour for all of my prospecting. I hate prospecting, it feels weird, so I just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get it done. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I reach out to warm contacts, follow up with emails, and do some \u201cstuff\u201d on LinkedIn. There are a bunch of ideas to help with this inside <em>The Copywriter Underground<\/em> too (see link above).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Project updates\u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Monday send a project update to your active clients, telling them what\u2019s up, what\u2019s on schedule, and what\u2019s needed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever I send an email saying \u201cWe\u2019re on track for on-time delivery!\u201d I always get a response of \u201cThis is amazing news!\u201d It keeps your clients engaged <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows you\u2019re working hard (aka worth the money they invested in you).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Off-boarding\u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides just sending the final invoice, do you send a questionnaire for feedback? Do you check in a month later to see how the launch went? Do you ask for a testimonial or results? Who knows where just one connection will take you?!?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019 I went to countless events in the city, became a lot more active on LinkedIn even though I didn\u2019t wanna, and followed up with people via email (see the \u2018prospecting hour\u2019 note above in Tip #3). I did a brave thing and bought a ticket to TCC IRL 2019, even when it stretched my budget at the time. I made <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amazing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> friends with whom I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> swap projects with .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I lost a major contract late summer of 2020 all I had to do was reach out to a few people on LinkedIn and got 3 new project leads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Make yourself a list of interesting events to attend<em> (especially TCCIRL)<\/em>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though all events are currently virtual, they are still a fantastic place to meet people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be active in the chat window. Ask questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow up with the presenter and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thank <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them for the knowledge they dropped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re uncomfortable at events, get on LinkedIn.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you request to connect with someone act as if you were meeting them in real life. Include a message with your request to make it more human.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just immediately sell your services. Ask them how they\u2019re doing during the pandemic, what strange new hobbies they\u2019ve discovered, or the most recent bad movie they watched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get creative!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Other options?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Groups are a good bet. Find a way that keeps you consistent and confident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>\ud83d\udee0<\/b><b>The \u201cGo Try It Out\u201d Section\u2014<\/b><b><i>Tip #5: Make More Offers<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get that spreadsheet or pull<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0out your pen and paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand your mindset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is the hardest part about prospecting and making offers for you?<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0What is holding you back?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get real with what you\u2019re doing right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Do you have a template for cold pitches?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Do you have a template for standard offers?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 How many offers did you make last month?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 How many do you want to make this month?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build a system (yay more systems!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your current process for generating leads (aka prospecting)?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your current process for making an offer?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nTip #6: Make smart investments<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart investments don\u2019t have to mean join an expensive mastermind or buy (yet another) online course. <em><strong>But they might.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Figure out where your gaps are and invest in <\/b><b><i>that.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaps can be in knowledge, network, accountability, or your personal life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I mentioned before, in 2019 I went to TCC IRL in NYC and made so many amazing copywriter friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did another round of a business accelerator to keep me focused up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I bought A LOT of books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I joined The TCC Underground (love it so much, highly recommend, you should 100% join).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I blocked off every single vacation I wanted to take in 2020 so I would plan all of my projects around them (aka planned when I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wasn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going to work).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3341\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GIF-6.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seriously &#8211; treat yourself!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making smart investments to help fill your gaps means when the winter vortex of recession hits, your business is insulated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But how do you know if an investment is smart or will get you the ROI you need?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you invest in something and aren\u2019t sure what you want from it, you won\u2019t feel like it was worth your time or money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A smart investment is one where you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intentional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your decision no matter how much it costs.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write down clearly what you want from the investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s a sales course, you could have a goal of winning 5 more sales the next month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a mastermind, maybe you want to develop at least one close relationship with someone else in that mastermind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For vacation, set the intention of shutting off your phone for at least 4 hours every day (or something like that)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always write down what I want from an investment to hold me accountable, make me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do the work, and get my desired return.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>\ud83d\udee0<\/b><b>The \u201cGo Try It Out\u201d Section\u2014<\/b><b><i>Tip #6: Make Smart Investments<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that spreadsheet? Get it<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get out your pen and paper again.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure out where you need to invest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 What is your biggest gap right now? Knowledge, Network, Accountability, Personal Life, or Other?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Your second?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Where might you fill that gap and how much will it cost? Worry less about the investment and more about the value you&#8217;ll get out of it.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0 Decide whether you invest NOW or save up for it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/thecopywriterclub.com\/copywriter-think-tank\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copywriter Think Tank<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on my SAVE FOR IT list)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nBonus Tip: Stay positive<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recessions suck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is stressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is on edge and worried about taking care of their loved ones.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be hard to stay positive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is 100% okay to feel horrible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you also have to make sure you\u2019re giving yourself a chance to feel joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is working from a place of fear 150% more exhausting, clients can sense your desperation.
