Most of them aren\u2019t worth the paper they\u2019re printed on. But we can vouch for the books listed below. They\u2019re all good. Focused on the business side of \u201ccommercial writing\u201d, this book is a bit dated, but it includes a lot of information that will help you get started. If you\u2019re struggling to create a pipeline of regular, high-paying work, this book may be useful.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1891686011\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1891686011&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=e707901e948c61ed2cd22f726f49aff5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>The Advertising Secrets of the Written Word<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Joseph Sugarman. Also known as <em>The Adweek Copywriting Handbook<\/em>, this book covers all kinds of copywriting advice from clarity and testimonials to establishing authority and selling a cure (rather than prevention). A very good primer on creating copy that converts potential customers into buyers.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/039472903X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=039472903X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=c4df8fffd74a68d94bad37924d4cd545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Ogilvy on Advertising<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by David Ogilvy. This book is often referred to as a classic. Written by one of the original Mad Men, this book is all about creating effective advertising. The old ads featured in the book are charming and perhaps a bit dated, but the advice is still applicable to copywriters today. Ogilvy\u2019s other book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/190491537X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=190491537X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=e867f6e87c72efd9f8fd73418dec79b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Confessions of an Advertising Man<\/em><\/a> is also a good read.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1119164001\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1119164001&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=9a9ed123555ad7700c4236e1a4933ddc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Hey Whipple, Squeeze This<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by Luke Sullivan. If Ogilvy\u2019s book had been written in the 90s, it may have resembled this excellent book about creating advertising that not only works, but is loved by consumers. A good read filled with principles for creating copy that connects emotionally with customers. Often mentioned as a favorite by the copywriters we know.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/020530902X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=020530902X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=17bbab780ec4ece73886a0a448583a34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>The Elements of Style<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Strunk and White (and Pearson). If you didn\u2019t pick up a copy of this book during your high-school or college writing course, it\u2019s time to do that now. This is the go-to desk reference when it comes to questions about grammar and style.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1440511411\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1440511411&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=5948fa96f3445dd7fcf3048de27969cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>The Ultimate Sales Letter<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by Dan Kennedy. This book is a fantastic resource for anyone who writes sales letters or online sales pages. It steps through the process of assembling an effective sales message, no matter what medium you write for. We\u2019ve listed this book in our \u201cless experienced\u201d section because it\u2019s an easy read. But don\u2019t be fooled, the principles taught here are all \u201cadvanced\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"color-blue\">Copywriting Books for More Advanced Writers&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughadvertisingbook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Breakthrough Advertising<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Eugene Schwartz.\u00a0If you could only read one book about creating effective copywriting, it should be this one. This is not an easy read. It\u2019s densely packed with the mechanisms for creating effective direct response advertising\u2014the kind of messages that customers can\u2019t say no to. This book is a bit more expensive than the typical book, and worth every penny. <em>Warning: if you see\u00a0a copy of this book for less than $125, it is almost certainly a fake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anything by Claude Hopkins. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00AMUHY70\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00AMUHY70&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=89a71de5406020e394511ed74bdcc724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>My Life in Advertising<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1603866361\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1603866361&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=0442af8aa459d579dc146f589ba64bdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Scientific Advertising<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are both revered in the direct response community as \u201cclassics\u201d that everyone should read. David Ogilvy (see above) said that <em>Scientific Advertising<\/em> changed his life. Because Hopkins wrote his books nearly a century ago, the language can be a bit difficult, but the principles he taught are pure gold. Because the copyright has expired, you can find both of these books free online with a little digging.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B019EWP3ZQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B019EWP3ZQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=07b243d247bc69a677564a39b450c052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Tested Advertising Methods<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by John Caples. Another old classic, is all about creating copy that works. Caples talks about formulas for increasing the selling power of your copy and how you can better appeal to the masses. Definitely worth adding to your library. If possible, get the fourth edition or earlier (the fifth edition has a few changes that at least one expert has severely criticized).<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1599185962\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1599185962&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=a8eec625cc84dbe81b7da023c7ba71c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>The Advertising Solution<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Craig Simpson and Brian Kurtz. This book takes the writings of Caples, Hopkins, Ogilvy, Schwartz, and Robert Collier and makes them more accessible to a modern audience. If you struggle to read any of the books listed above in this section, try this book first. It pulls out the best advice from the very best copywriters of the past century. Highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Super Mega Brainy Bundle<\/strong><\/em> by Joanna Wiebe. This collection of six ebooks all about creating online messages that connect with customers is worth every penny. If you can find it. It\u2019s not currently offered for sale (though we\u2019ll update the page if that changes).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"color-blue\"><em>Note: At The Copywriter Club In Real Life event in New York City, Parris Lampropolous shared his recommended reading list for copywriters. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecopywriterclub.com\/parris-book-list\/\">You\u2019ll find that list here<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"color-blue\">Best Books About Content Creation<\/span><\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1439156816\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1439156816&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=48a66a4c642c77e6af6c121cd05c7a96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>On Writing<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Stephen King. As you might guess from the author and title, this book is about writing in general, not copywriting. But it is a great book about the craft of writing, dealing with rejection and overcoming the resistance (for more on the resistance, see <em>The War of Art<\/em> below). What\u2019s more, it\u2019s filled with anecdotes from the life of the best horror writer ever to grace a best-seller list. This is our favorite book on the subject of writing.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060891548\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0060891548&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=10d30b30fae3d5a23579ecdaddaf459b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>On Writing Well<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by William Zinsser. Another book about writing, this one covers the basics of writing clear, concise copy, interviewing, reaching your audience, and more.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1118905555\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118905555&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=0bd85f3815fcfffa33396b7cda4eac6a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Everybody Writes<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Ann Handley. This is billed as the \u201cgo-to guide\u201d for creating copy for your business that will attract (and even entertain) customers.\u00a0As the cover says, it\u2019s all about creating ridiculously good content that will help you create a relationship with your readers\/customers. A very easy, and good, read. Ann also has another book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1118232607\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118232607&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=56d879d011f4a0f4caf248161f3d5f26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Content Rules<\/em><\/a>, all about creating engaging web content that is worth checking out.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0997875402\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0997875402&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=406dbd1601a355da889a9ff9611ea813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Master Content Marketing<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Pamela Wilson. Pamela is a designer who made the shift to content creator as she built her business, then joined Copyblogger\u2019s content team. This book is all about creating clear content goals and strategy to guide what you create and is filled with examples you can draw from. Pamela also created an interesting \u00a0podcast with Jeff Goins that tracked the progress of writing the book.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"color-blue\">Books about Human Behavior and Psychology<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Copywriting isn\u2019t just about words. It\u2019s about getting readers to take action. Whether that\u2019s a request for more information or clicking the buy button, it\u2019s all about human psychology. These are a few of the best books about that topic. Just remember to test these principles in your own work. What works in a laboratory, doesn\u2019t always translate to a blog post or sales page.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/006124189X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=006124189X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=7bc7a70d610e39a61d57bef956bae696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Influence<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1501109790\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1501109790&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=58c3b55749f40754138edf372d2eecd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Pre-suasion<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Robert Cialdini. <em>Influence<\/em> is probably the most-ever referenced book on how human behavior\u00a0is affected by things like scarcity and social proof. If you haven\u2019t read it, add it to your bookshelf now. And <em>Pre-suasion<\/em> takes a look at what you can do before you ask for the sale to make sure you\u2019ll be successful. Full of interesting stories and lots of science, we highly recommend both of these books.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374533555\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0374533555&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=9e82014759c87940344c070487a363a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Thinking, Fast and Slow<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Daniel Kanneman. This is the book that started all of the discussion about System 1 and System 2 thinking. Or the lizard brain vs. the human brain. Kanneman will help you understand how humans process information and make decisions\u2014critical knowledge for anyone who writes copy that needs to get a response. Be sure to read this one.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400064287\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1400064287&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=0893d9845f3846d4d7a8298c918bd03e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Made to Stick<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0385528752\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0385528752&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=ac5a3fe1003e2f584b30d02ea7d4d579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Switch<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Chip and Dan Heath. The Heath Brothers make human psychology easy to read. Their books are packed with excellent advice (and frameworks) for getting customers to pay attention to your message (<em>Made to Stick<\/em>) and getting them to switch to your offer or product (<em>Switch<\/em>). If you write copy that needs to get customers to take action, study both of these books.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1118113365\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118113365&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=a61efe4e42ed4c4214703bf8e0357534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Brainfluence<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Roger Dooley. In this book, Dooley shares short write ups of significant findings from neuroscience and suggests how it might translate into the sales process (and other business applications). It\u2019s not a book about one big thing, rather it\u2019s about dozens of ideas you can test and try to make your copy more effective. And it&#8217;s fascinating.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0385523890\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0385523890&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brandstory00-20&amp;linkId=3cdef5c2565333def9f726c8518fad3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Buyology<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Martin Lindstom. All about what influences your customers to buy. Lindstrom pulls from neuromarketing and other scientific studies of the things that determine whether a prospect will purchase what you have to offer or walk away. If you\u2019ve ever struggled to get started on a copywriting project, or you break into a sweat when you stare at a blank page, this book is for you. Pressfield writes about the difference between an amateur artist and a professional, overcoming the resistance, and shares a ton of great advice for getting stuff done. Writing about what creativity is exactly is a huge challenge, but McKenzie comes as close to getting it right as anyone ever has. It\u2019s not a process. And it\u2019s not an undefinable something that just happens. Whatever it is, this book captures it almost perfectly. Positioning is all about how the products you write about relate to the other products in the marketplace. This is a great resource for figuring out how to write about your brand without coming off looking like everyone else in your category.
