SG Heart Map- first launched in December 2014 has been an ongoing project up until the end of this month, and it’s ending it with a bang.
“Home is where the heart is,” one of the members of the organising commitee, Thomas said.
The aim for the entire project was for people to rediscover the different places in Singapore. So far, it has been a fulfilling year of events, finally leading up to the finale on the 26-29 of November. This year’s long collective of events had 50 localities picked as the prominent places of Singapore. Why 50? You guessed it, SG50!

This is not just another SG50 event. 80 000 people contributed stories about places in Singapore and why they love these particular places. These of which can be read on their site.
“A place alone has no meaning, however when you attach a memory to it, it gives the place a greater significance,” Thomas explained.
Much effort and teamwork has been put into the entire project, spanning two years of planning, while having executed events such as- mass formations (with up to 2000 Singaporeans volunteers,) forming the visual of the Singapore map.
Other activities included guided tours of each of the 50 landmarks, where an app was even launched as a side project, due to popular demand, for people who missed the guided tours. Anyone can download the app on their personal smartphone, enabling them to give self-guided tours while walking through each trail and past each landmark.

The grand finale- SG HEART MAP FESTIVAL@ Float features the works of seven prominent local artists across Singapore. They have pieced together a multitude of art forms such as film, literary works, audio installations, sketches, illustrations, photographs and animations that will blow your socks off! These artists were inspired by reading the heartfelt Singaporean stories about each location in Singapore which spurred them on to creating their works.
Immerse yourself in the heart-warming stories of the SG Heart Map! These are placed within a specially constructed dome, decorated by an animated 3D projection mapping. The animations even change in real time, so don’t expect to see something similar when you visit. As an animation enthusiast, the cute little animations of the Singapore scene changing from day to night was really pleasing and endearing.
SONICMEMORIES BY ZUL MAHMOD
Upon venturing closer towards each mailbox, a familiar recording would play. The concept behind this audio installation is that of a sonic postcard, allowing the listeners to relive memories as they close their eyes and listen. Perhaps you’ll hear the crowd at an NDP parade? Or the music from a joyful wedding celebration? Be sure to close your eyes for a moment to imagine the scene and soak in the sounds!
SCENES OF OUR HEARTS SHOWCASE BY URBAN SKETCHERS SINGAPORE
Over the years, Urban Sketchers Singapore had led 400 Singaporeans across the city to create unique and personal sketches of different locations. – Tia Boon Sim and Zaihan Kariyani from Urban Sketchers Singapore led about 400 Singaporeans to four popular hangout spots across the city over four weekends to create unique and personal sketches of different locations. The four locations are: the Civic District, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Clementi, and Changi Airport. It was interesting to see the differences in style between each artists and their individual way of representing each location, giving each piece a distinct appearance.
HOMESCAPES BY GWEN LEE
Another work of art from a home-grown talent, Gwen Lee. She curated these photographs capture the essence of a Singaporean home, piquing the viewers’ curiosity with untold stories behind what appear to be common objects or sights that we see every day- Gwen worked with five photographers (Ang Song Nian, Bob Lee, Darren Soh, George Wong and Robert Zhao) to capture these photos. The back lights on each photograph panel adds a sense of depth to each photograph. As cheesy as it sounds, each of these pictures speak a thousand words, but what those words may be, would differ to each individual.
THEMED OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS
as well as works of the local artists will be screened, with the background MBS and CBD skyline, for a romantic and uplifting night.
Sneak preview
‘A Beautiful Day’ by visual artist William Chan is a documentation of Singapore from dawn to night.
’50 First Kisses’ by Royston Tan is a showcase of 50 Singaporean couples and their most heart-warming moments, that took place at various places in Singapore.
FUTURE CITY VISION BY MICHAEL NG
100 students were gathered to draw their renditions of a future Singapore. The wacky illustrations are displayed on tall panels and even large balloons that surround the viewers, so that it feels like you’re sitting in the midst of a very cartoony colorful future Singapore. This adorable installation felt like a blast from the past as it reminded me of my own childhood. Slightly ironic, considering that it was meant to be about Singapore’s future!
WORDPLAY! A LITERARY PLAYGROUND BY KENNY LECK
Inspired by the themes of childhood, 20 literary works of prose and poetry by a team of 10 local writers are presented alongside large balloon installations. One way of experiencing the different exhibits is by hopping on top of the mini merry-go-round and letting each balloon flit past your vision, feeling the wind in your hair. It felt really reminiscent of a more carefree time!
There was even a poem written on this school shoe balloon!
