Wanderlust: The Other Side of the Coin

Opinion by Jurveen / December 20th, 2015

The desire to book a plane ticket, pack one’s bags and set off to a place that you have always dreamt of going, sets you feeling a curve of emotions. We are driven by wanderlust and an irresistible desire for freedom otherwise known as Eleutheromania, a word originated from Greek that alludes to “having intense and irresistible desire for freedom”. It’s hard to let go of the idea of travelling and almost impossible to pull the chain of pulsating feelings to a halt.

But, let’s face it. The picture is very much different when you’re a student who is juggling school with a part-time job or a fresh graduate who is anxiously waiting for your first pay. So what do you do when you log onto Facebook or Instagram and all you see are pictures of holiday destinations that you’re dying to go to, but do not have the financial means to fund your own trip? It’s become commonplace to dream that you’re en route to an exotic location, or against the backdrop of gondolas, or even relaxing idly on a hammock whilst reading a book.

To all my aspiring globetrotters, if you could internalize the following commandments that I am about to share with you, then you will never have to feel a tinge of sadness creeping onto your soul again even when your pocket feels a little tight!

  • Always remember, start small. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by a treasure trove of islands that promises to-die-for beach gateways with soft sands and pristine waters. The surrounding countries tend not to burn a hole in your pocket too! So make list of all the neighbouring countries, find out what is special about each of them, travel to these places and let yourself soak into the culture, traditions and customs.  You will come out feeling more rejuvenated and alive! Who knows that along the way, accidental meet-ups could be transformed into lifelong friendships.

  • It is OKAY to not be able to afford for a trip. Be honest with yourself and say no when you need to. No one knows your bank account balance better than yourself. The last thing you want is having to think ten times before purchasing anything at all on your trip.

  • Your dream destination will not disappear! This is a fact. It will be there in all its glory and beauty. Rest assured, even if your dream location happens to undergo any changes, you will still be able to access all the exquisiteness it has to offer.

  • Your current circumstances are not cast in stone. So avoid indulging in self-pity. This is the worst form self-harm one can inflict upon himself. It not only messes with your head, it turns you into a green-eyed monster who can never be truly happy for others! Have a bit of faith in yourself that you will be able to afford these trips, soon. Go slow on your pocket with your daily expenses and even if it takes you a long time to afford your dream trip, nothing gratifies the soul more than being able to afford your trip after working hard and saving for it! It is a REWARDING taste. I assure you.

The spirit of travelling has no end. It is one hell of a soul-seeking ride. Be patient with yourself. Your turn may not be next but it will come, soon. Next time, before sadness or feelings of negativity starts creeping onto you, always remember-adventure is never too far away.
